jon secada q&a

30Mar12

It’s always great to see a celebrity willing to speak out on a semi-taboo topic. Last year, Grammy winner Jon Secada lost his father to complications from chronic hepatitis C, and he wants you to know there’s no shame in having the disease. I spoke to Jon about discovering his father had kept his condition a secret, and the new song he wrote that he hopes will inspire others to take charge of their health.

I’ve been editing a lot more than writing these days, hence the paucity of posts. But I was happy to chat with Terri Eggeman, a nurse and National Psoriasis Foundation mentor, about living with the chronic condition (now made famous by Kim Kardashian, which we chuckled about). An aside: I hang out on a lot of health foundation websites (wild!), and NPF‘s is one of the best.

Can you be a foodie and stay fit? That’s one of the questions I posed to Brett Hoebel, a trainer who has helped contestants on The Biggest Loser and the Food Network’s Fat Chef. (Spoiler: Yes, you can!)

I love doing gift guides — shopping on the clock! I would feel guilty, except our readers love them, too. They’re always some of my most trafficked stories. Here’s a round-up of gift ideas for Valentine’s Day.

If you resolved in 2012 to eat healthier foods and save money, check out my tips on eating clean for less green.

Got an Amazon gift card that’s burning a hole in your pocket? Why not pick up one of my picks for the best healthy cookbooks of 2011?

Christmas is over, but there’s still more celebrating to do! If you’re pondering how to get your diet back on track while New Year’s Eve still looms, check out my review of low-calorie cocktail mixers. We conducted a Friday afternoon office taste test — which made me quite popular with my co-workers! They’re a discerning bunch, so you can trust their picks.

I don’t mean to brag, but if there’s one thing I know, it’s what gifts beauty product junkies will love! Just ask my overflowing stash, which includes several of these picks.

It doesn’t get much more inspiring than the story of Bethany Hamilton, the surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack at age 13 and went on to become a champion. I was thrilled to be able to interview the now 21-year-old for Spry. Bethany also promoted the interview on her own website, where she frequently blogs about healthy living.

Teacher Amy Wagner entered one of our Spry contests, and I was struck by her story about helping a student get in shape. Teachers are perpetually overworked and underpaid, but still many of them can’t resist investing time and energy outside the classroom to make their students’ lives better. I was happy to shine a spotlight on just one such effort.
