On the morning of the Society of Public Health Education’s annual conference in Nashville, I woke up with some of the worst allergy symptoms of my life. Not only was I pretty miserable, but the one place you hate to be sneezing, sniffling and coughing is a public health conference. I wanted to wear a sign that said, “It’s allergies!” In any case, I powered through, and was excited to snag a one-on-one interview with the keynote speaker, the National Council on Aging’s President and CEO Dr. James Firman. And I didn’t sneeze on him once.

It was just an ordinary Friday afternoon, when lo this email arrived: “Would you like to interview Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin about The Great American Try-On program from Depend to offer self-assurance to the 56 million Americans who live with incontinence?” Why yes, yes I would.

It seemed like an odd product/spokesperson pairing, but then Lisa has amassed a large and loyal Twitter following with her candor, so why not speak out on a sensitive topic? True to form, she was delightfully frank in our interview, and Harry was, too.

best dance dvd workouts

I’m quite devoted to Jazzercise, so it was fun to see how the latest cardio dance DVDs stand up to my favorite workout. I don’t think any of them will replace class for me (I’m social!) but they’re great for travel or days I can’t get out.

spring heels get comfy

Every spring, I have a bad habit of buying a couple of cheap trendy sandals from Target and wearing them out. But after testing out some of these true comfort brands for Spry, I think I’ve converted to quality over quantity. We were truly shocked by how comfortable some of these 3 and 4+ inchers were, even at the end of the day. Sorry, Target. I’m ponying up for some supportive heels this year.

my 7th TWNA award

Last week, there was a PBS quiz circulating that asked, “Do you live in a social and cultural bubble?” I know my upbringing was fairly sheltered, but I was surprised to realize just how much perspective working at Road King gave me — from walking factory floors to interviewing generations of truck drivers. It definitely made me a bit nostalgic for the job.

But I’m burying the lede. I was thrilled to learn this weekend that my 2010 Road King cover story about trucking reality shows, “Haul of Fame,” earned a 2011 Silver Award from the Truck Writers of North America. I’m very proud of my work at Road King, and it’s an honor to be recognized by the trucking industry.
