Katie --

Thanks for using my little 15 minutes of fame on your blog! My story has been reprinted in many places, but I'm honored that a fellow copy editor would find it worth including.

I'm married to a Nashville native, and we've been following the flooding there with horror -- hope you and yours are coping okay. Take care.

Best,
David Daniel, CNN

Reading the ASME magazine the other day, I was impressed with John Ratzenberger's approach in trying to resolve the desperate situation that America is currently in with having very few people interested in plant maintenance. I have seen this deterioration coming down the pike many years ago when it was impressed on everyone that they had to have a college degree. I served a five years' apprenticeship in Scotland as an engineer before going to sea as a marine engineering officer. You had to have had hands on training on hand tools, machine tools and attend night school to learn the theoretical approach to everything, and engineering graduate was not allowed to go to sea as he didn't have the hands-on experience. Learning the nuts and bolt of my profession was of paramount importance and this has led me to being an Instructor for the past forty years. I own my own business and have conducted seminars in engineering areas such as vibration analysis, ultrasonic airborne detection, shaft alignnment and teaching students on all aspects of plant maintenance.
If I can help your organization to train young people on how to use tools and apply themselves in industry. Can you use my experience?
Can you please send me information on how your program works and where might a branch be in my area?

Yours faithfully,

John C. Robertson PE(Mar)/CPE
